Friday Feature: Kristin Bagby aka @wannabe.adventurer
This week's Friday Feature is my friend Kristin Bagby aka @wannabe.adventurer on Instagram. I chose Kristin for this Friday's Feature because when I think about her, the first word that comes to mind is authentic. She is REAL. She doesn't put on a show, she doesn't overly try to impress people, she just loves her family, goes on some rad adventures, but maintains a realness and a humbleness about herself that I greatly admire. She also does some totally amazing things, while juggling a home, a job, a husband and two absolutely adorable little girls. I'm old school and she may kill me for saying so, but she is just the All-American Girl. We have tons of similar interests and its kind of cool because the things that I want to do but have never done, she's done lots of and vice versa for her. Her river trips are *THE BOMB*.
Hey adventurers! Kristin here. I love the outdoors, minimalism, classic rock, margaritas, and rivers (just to name a few things). I’m a mom to a 9 year old and almost 7 year old, both girls. Life can get pretty hectic and crazy for a full time working mom or dad, am I right? However, I have decided to make getting out into nature a priority for me and my family as well. Plus, there are so many statistics on the benefits of being outside such as reduced stress levels, reduction in depression, improved health from exercise…just to name a few.
“Less is more”…you’ve probably heard that saying at some point in your life. I’m going to get on my minimalism soapbox for a minute here and say 1000 times, YES! It really is. People often think or ask me, “How do you do it?” Well, it’s actually very simple. Because I have implemented a few key practices from minimalism in my life, I have more time and money to enjoy the things I love to do outside. Less time cleaning a giant house, less money on my mortgage, etc. means more time and money to do the stuff that really matters to me. (P.S. I just want to say if you have a big house and spend lots and lots of money on knick knacks there is nothing wrong with that if that is what is important to you). I tried that route and it did not fulfill me personally and I have prioritized what is important to me and now pursue those things full throttle. :)
I love hiking, I love camping, I love trying new things (like canyoneering, that was bad A!); but so far my favorite thing has been river rafting. (Editors note: OMG I AM SO JEALOUS) I just completed my 7th river rafting trip and boy let me tell you that it is addicting! The river is healing, restorative, fun, refreshing, peaceful, exciting, and just plain magical. There are also some amazing hikes on river trips. I’ve seen some beautiful places. If you haven’t ever taken a multi-day river trip, do yourself a favor and book one immediately! I’m already planning my next one. :)
Anyway, make time for you! Make time for the outdoors! You will be a less stressed individual if you do. Trust me, I know it’s hard, but if you make it a priority you won’t be sorry that you did. If you’re one of those people that need someone to come along side you to get started there are plenty of folks out there always looking for an adventure buddy. Talk to your existing friends, start a hiking group, join a Meetup group, etc. I have had several friends join in on my shenanigans and it’s been a blast. Be the change you wish to see….I’m kind of trying to throw together an informal family nature club type thing. We have our first outing scheduled for next month. Not sure how successful it will be, but hey if it’s just me and one other mom with our kiddos that’s fine by me. So, I hope you are inspired to get out and try something new (I am! I really want to try rock climbing next!). Happy adventuring!
